Canada

In Canada, three levels of government (municipal, provincial, federal) provide funding to Housing First programmes.

The Canadian Housing First Network includes representation from 10 provinces and made up representatives from HF programme management, people with lived experience in HF, and National Alliance to End Homelessness.

Housing First was administratively supported (½ per week) from the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health located in Toronto. The CHFN is in the process of moving this support to another community agency that has a large HF programme.

The CHFN is currently unfunded and coordinated by two retired professors, but they intend to apply for government funding once the federal election is over. They do projects mostly related to fidelity and research, develop evidence briefs, and deliver webinars, and they are now looking to develop HF training and technical support for programmes across the country.

Our Partners in Canada

A Way Home Canada

A Way Home Canada is a national coalition dedicated to preventing and ending youth homelessness in Canada. They lead a Collective Impact movement that brings together all levels of government, service providers, researchers, advocates, and—critically—youth with lived experience. Their work advances evidence-based policies, programs, and practices that shift the response from managing homelessness to preventing it, ensuring that every young person has the support and opportunities to thrive. A Way Home Canada has inspired communities and countries around the world to adopt the A Way Home brand as a way to participate in a growing international movement for change. Their main areas of work are youth homelessness prevention, systems change and policy advocacy, training and capacity building.
