Slovakia

In Slovakia, an undignified approach to homeless people still prevails. The model of capacity-based night shelters and field services continues to receive the most systemic support. Support for a realistic, systematic, and, above all, dignified end to homelessness is conditioned by the absence of a legally defined homeless person and services such as Housing First or Housing Led models.

According to surveys, there are approximately 80,000 people in need of housing in Slovakia, of which an estimated 4,000 are in the city of Bratislava.

The history of Housing First is short and is based on NGO initiatives that have been gradually developing since 2016, but only as small pilot projects without official systemic support.

In Slovakia, the Housing First and Housing Led models are still primarily in the hands of NGOs, which are the main implementers of these approaches. In recent years, the city of Bratislava has also become involved, attempting to create a small number of housing models.

Housing First and Housing Led are based primarily on cooperation between NGOs and the private sector (Banks), private landlords who believe in the effectiveness of this model, and the support of philanthropists, foundations, private companies, and individuals. Housing models in Slovakia exist thanks to the strength of society, not because of systemic state assistance. Despite efforts, this situation has not changed significantly for years.
